Is this Free JCB 1700B a good idea?

I have a chance to get a free 1984 JCB 1700B from a customer. It's a bit of a mess, with oil leaks from the turbo and every piston. The roof is dented and the wiring is a disaster. But it runs and drives and the hydraulics seem to work okay. The idea is to send it to my camp in Maine to help my neighbor plow our long, steep road. He is not great at fixing things and he's already gone through two of my plow trucks. I'm looking for advice on this machine.

Does anyone know what Perkins engine it has? Where can I find manuals for it, especially for the workshop and parts and what fluids should I use? I know it's a long shot, but maybe it can handle moving the snow back without him destroying it. Any help would be great.

@c3nt3r stag3 bro, a "Free" stuff usually means that you're going to pay for it later lol. although, it could also be a fun project.
You're right, the engine is a Perkins, likely a 4.236 or a similar model from that era.
These engines are known for being tough, but after 40 years, every seal is probably a potential leak.
The fact that it runs is a good sign, but those oil leaks from the turbo and pistons are a huge red flag.
It's definitely a project, not a workhorse.

I have a 1985 JCB 1700B I got two years ago to clear trails at my cabin in Vermont. Sounds like yours is pretty similar! Mine has a Perkins 4-cylinder engine and runs well now that I fixed the leaks. I found a good repair manual online, and Perkins has info on fluids and care on their website. If the hydraulics still work, it should be fine for snow work, just watch the wiring and seals.

Well, Hydraulic oil is one. You can pour a lot in it before using a wrench.
