How to test swing motor play safely in the field

My 3CX has some slop in the swing, and I’m trying to determine if it’s just normal wear or if something might be on the verge of breaking.
What’s the best way to check for swing motor play without making things worse
or putting myself in harm’s way under a moving machine?

Start by parking on flat ground and lowering the boom to relieve pressure.
Next, take hold of the bucket edge and try to rock it back and forth if you hear any clunking, that indicates wear.

Also, inspect the waste grease for any metal flakes.
If you spot those sequins, it’s a clear sign that the slew bearing is on its way out.
