Travel speed problem

My machine is running slow in every travel mode. When I raise the boom, it moves a little faster, and reverse also feels quicker, maybe because chain slack gives the motors an easier start. What should I check first?

can't say for sure, but it sounds like a hydraulic problem from the way you described it but I could be wrong. It would help if you can tell us the model.

When travel speed improves with the boom raised, it often indicates a weak charge pressure or a load sense issue rather than chain slack, as the hydraulic priority can shift flow when another function is engaged. Do you have the ability to check charge pressure at the test port, as that would confirm whether the pump is keeping up under travel demand?
