Quick checks for hydraulic pump cavitation during cold starts

After hearing that horrible noise during a cold startup and worrying that I might’ve damaged my pump, I thought it’d be good to ask. What quick checks do you perform to catch cavitation early on during cold starts, before any serious damage occurs?
 
There was one winter where every time I started up it sounded like the machine was furious with me. I found out it was just low fluid and cold oil causing the ruckus. Now, I make sure to pre-warm it, check the suction filters, and really pay attention to the sounds. Silence is golden especially when it means saving your pump from an early retirement
 
After that heart-stopping cold start, I knew I had to change my ways. Now, I listen for that ominous growl, check for any foamy fluid, and feel the return lines. If something feels off, I shut it down and let it warm up a little longer. Honestly, it’s just cheap insurance.
 
I remember one freezing morning when I heard that awful gravel-in-a-blender noise and quickly shut everything down.
Since then, I've made it a habit to keep an eye on the suction lines, check the fluid levels, and let the machine idle for a bit before I mess with the hydraulics. Catching cavitation early is way better than shelling out for a new pump later on.
 
I never touch a joystick until the return line feels warm to the touch. a great trick for cold mornings is to deadhead a low pressure circuit
it shears the oil and generates heat much faster than just idling, getting you into the safe zone without cavitation
 
That's a solid tip. Many people forget how important it is to warm up hydraulics the right way. Using deadheading to create heat in cold weather is a clever move. I appreciate you sharing this.
