Practical ways to test regulator voltage on JCB electrical systems

I’ve been on the hunt for some pesky electrical issues with a JCB, trying to figure out if the regulator is actually doing its job or just pretending to be busy.
What’s your favorite way to test voltage safely and accurately out in the field?

Spent a whole week chasing down a bad battery before I finally figured out that the regulator was the real troublemaker. Now I make it a habit to check the base voltage, rev the engine, and keep an eye on the readings. If I see any spikes or drops, I know exactly where to focus my attention. Just five minutes with a multimeter can save me hours of guesswork.

Learned the hard way not to trust the dash gauge.
Now, I go straight for the multimeter: I check the voltage when it’s cold, then warm, and finally under load.
When the voltage stays consistent, I can relax a bit.
But if it starts jumping around, I know it’s time to investigate before something costly breaks down.

After one time when a JCB battery went bad on me, I decided to start testing the regulator whenever I notice any strange lights. I simply put the meter on the posts, check it at idle, and then again at higher RPMs it's straightforward and effective. If the voltage can’t hold steady, it’s definitely not doing its job.
