I keep running into JCB 212S machines whenever I’m outside the States, and it feels like they must’ve rolled a ton of them off the line because they’re everywhere. Are they popular because they’re reliable, or just because they were cheap and plentiful at the time? I’ve never had the chance to actually run one myself, so I’m curious

The JCB 212S is a hit around the world 'cause it's built to last. JCB makes tough, machines, and they've got service centers everywhere. That's why so many builders trust the 212S, mostly in places like India where getting good service is super important.

@turdxop it's a market saturation. The reason you see so many JCB 212S models outside the US is because JCB is a British company, and they basically invented the backhoe loader (the original was the JCB 3C).
They have a massive market share in the UK, Europe, India, and other regions, so they're the default machine. The 212S is just one of their very popular 'smaller footprint' models.
also ofc like Alan said, they're tough, dependable machines, but one common headache is that the hydraulics use BSP fittings, which can be a nightmare to source parts for quickly if you're stuck in a rural US area.
Outside the US, the parts network is stellar
