backhoe transmission issue

my uncle recently got his first backhoe and he's super excited about it, but it's got a few issues he can't figure out. The biggest problem is the transmission.
I checked, and it only has reverse and one gear, and it won't shift out of first. It doesn't even sound like it's trying to shift or anything.
He bought a new Reverse/Drive lever, but from what he's been reading, he's pretty sure that's not the problem. He's got the manuals now, but is a little lost on where to start.

he's been taking care of me since I was little, I want to help him. Any ideas on what could be wrong with it? He's a total newbie at this, so any direction would be awesome.

Could be as simple as a linkage or cable issue not letting it shift, or something hydraulic if it's a powershift, start checking the basics like the linkages, fluid level, and filters

My first guess would be a powershift transmission fault.. and the fact that you have reverse and one forward gear suggests the transmission is in a limp home mode due to an electrical failure, so replacing the lever usually doesn't fix this. First, you need the model and year for a specific answer, but generally, the issue is electrical. Try to check all the fuses and relays related to the transmission control unit. If those are good, the problem is most likely a failed solenoid or a damaged wiring harness going into the transmission itself. Since the gears are shifted by solenoids, a bad one or a chewed-through wire will prevent the ECU from selecting the other speeds. Focus on testing the resistance of the gear solenoids as outlined in the manual. Hope you get it sorted out!

you should start with the basics, don't touch the levers yet. If it won't even try to shift, the first suspect is often the hydraulic/transmission system.
Check the oil, is the transmission fluid clean and at the correct level? Low or dirty oil can prevent the clutches/bands from engaging.
also do a filter check, backhoes are notorious for clogging their transmission filter. A badly clogged filter starves the system of the pressure it needs to activate the shift solenoids or clutches. That's usually the cheapest and easiest fix to try first.

Once those are confirmed good, then you start chasing electrical/solenoid issues

Great replies from everyone. Additionally, it's a good idea to check the transmission pressure ports using a gauge. Low PSI at the shifting points can indicate possible problems with the internal clutch pack or the valve body. If your vehicle has it, don’t forget to scan for fault codes thru the diagnostic connector to help identify any faults on the ECU side
